Why American life went on as normal during the killer pandemic of 1969

.
That was the year of Woodstock, Apollo 11 and the Vietnam War was raging yet no lockdowns, schools and businesses weren't shutdown and life carried on as normal. There wasn't even a vaccine yet they didn't shut down the whole world because of flu!

You still have nothing to do with the United States , where were you in 1969? surely not America, more like getting buggered by the priests in paddy land and dreaming about lady boys in Thailand, but you know all about what happened here in 1969 :palm:

“Fewer people died during this pandemic than in previous pandemics for several reasons:

“Some immunity against the N2 flu virus may have been retained in populations struck by the Asian Flu strains which had been circulating since 1957”

“The pandemic did not gain momentum until near the winter school holidays, thus limiting the infection spreading”

“Improved medical care gave vital support to the very ill”

“The availability of antibiotics that were more effective against secondary bacterial infections.”

Thanks Arsecheese how would I have found that without you? 100,000 people died in the US and over 30,000 in the UK, unlike CV-19 it killed far more under 65 so was far more pernicious, did you know that?

You are not a citizen of the United States, you do not live here, and our domestic affairs are none of your business.

Oh so now we have another obnoxious cunt on the case. Do you seriously think I take the slightest bit of notice what that racist bastard Ghoulo and you have to say, seriously. It will never happen so why do you waste your time? Do you really think Hong Kong flu was confined to the US, ignorant peasant?

My daughter in law's family suffered terribly during the war in Saigon. Have you ever castigated that black cunt Ghoulo for calling her a Gook? No of course not, so seriously go fuck yourself with a red hot poker!!

“Life continued as normal,” said Jeffrey Tucker, the editorial director for the American Institute for Economic Research. “But as with now, no one knew for certain how deadly [the pandemic] would turn out to be. Regardless, people went on with their lives.”

Which, he said, isn’t all that surprising. “That generation approached viruses with calm, rationality and intelligence,” he said. “We left disease mitigation to medical professionals, individuals and families, rather than politics, politicians and government.”

While it’s way too soon to compare the numbers, H3N2 has so far proved deadlier than COVID-19

Two government doctors, not even epidemiologists” — Richard Hatchett and Carter Mecher, who worked for the George W. Bush administration — “hatched the idea [of using government-enforced social distancing] and hoped to try it out on the next virus.” We are, in effect, Tucker said, part of a grand social experiment.

But the differences between how the world responded to two pandemics, separated by 50 years, is more complicated than any single explanation.

“If I were 48 in 1968, I would have most likely served in World War II,” said Moir. “I would have had a little brother who served in Korea, and possibly might have a son or daughter fighting in Vietnam.” Death, he said, was a bigger and in some ways more accepted part of American life.

Indeed it killed 80,000 in the US only two years ago!

It was not as transmissible. Corona is unusually so.

Half of the victims were under the age of 65, that in itself made it far more deadly!

The subsequent 1968 influenza pandemic—or “Hong Kong flu” or “Mao flu” as some western tabloids dubbed it—would have an even more dramatic impact, killing more than 30 000 individuals in the UK and 100 000 people in the USA, with half the deaths among individuals younger than 65 years—the reverse of COVID-19 deaths in the current pandemic. Yet, while at the height of the outbreak in December, 1968, The New York Times described the pandemic as “one of the worst in the nation's history”, there were few school closures and businesses, for the most, continued to operate as normal.

The relative unconcern about two of the largest influenza pandemics of the 20th century—the Encyclopaedia Britannica estimates that the 1968 pandemic, due to an H3N2 influenza virus, was responsible for between 1 million to 4 million deaths globally—presents a marked contrast and, to some critics, a rebuke to today's response to COVID-19 and the heightened responses to outbreaks of other novel pathogens, such as avian and swine influenza. “When hysteria is rife, we might try some history”, opined Simon Jenkins in an article in The Guardian titled “Why I'm taking the coronavirus hype with a pinch of salt”. “The [1968] pandemic raged over three years, yet is largely forgotten today”, commented The Wall Street Journal, “a testament to how societies are now approaching a similar crisis in a much different way”.

The ultimate testament to the supposed stoicism of earlier generations, according to this line of thought, is the 1918–19 influenza pandemic, in which at least 50 million people worldwide perished, but which resulted in few public monuments and was largely “forgotten” by the collectivity of society.

Do I need to repeat the facts again?

Your numbers cover nearly two years, COVID has done in 100,000 in three months. Today we have considerable numbers dying from the seasonal flu when a five minute stop at the corner drug store will give on the protection, so there are always going to be numbers of avoidable deaths

All these virus aren’t the same but COVID is new, novel, no existing immunities, no preventative measures

Half of the victims of Hong Kong flu were under 65 did you know that? Somebody said on UK tv the other day that less than 350 people without co-morbidities died in the UK from CV-19, I imagine it's a similar story in the US.

Shut the fuck up....dick head,... with a small d naturally. You are not a citizen of MY STATE yet you want MY STATE to comply with lock down procedures that other more libtard infected states use to control the people in the hopes of winning an election for a senile old fool that is dementia ridden.

ILLEGAL aliens are not citizens of MY COUNTRY yet you seek to flood them in by the millions with no regard for past or current immigration law. YOU reek of the stench of partisanship. There is one good thing though........Because of people like yourself and others like you, you are literally helping to breed millions more like myself who have finally had enuff of people like you. Guys like me wont suffer fools, we wont even take the time to question,.... instead we simply slap the cocksucker right off your faces,....and at the drop of a hat I might add. Our numbers are growing as we speak. Best of luck....

When was the last time you were warned about 12b? Talking about somebody who is a member on this site getting "buggered" as a child is a violation. The mods are discussing this, if this is your first offense then this warning will suffice and we'll be done with it. But if this is a later offense you will be banned. Pay attention to this. This rule matters here.

The PHONY media was still in the business of actual journalism back then. Today, they are an arm of the DNC where...….

"You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before."

I am on public record here saying I have no opinion on shut downs. I defer to the expertise of public health professionals, like Trump's own expert Dr. Fauci.

I stopped reading after the first paragraph because you are going to have to up your game if if you want to interact with your intellectual superiors
