Walmart boss earns 1,200 times as much as the company’s median worker

Joe Biden - "Time to put Trump in the bullseye."
And he doesn't even do anything. CEOs just attend BS "meetings" all the time.

may 13 2018 The salaries of CEOs have ballooned over the past 50 years, extending huge gaps with those of their employees. Today, so-called ‘fat cats’ can earn the annual salary of a typical worker by lunchtime.
In its latest filing, Walmart disclosed that company CEO Doug McMillon’s total compensation rose two percent in 2017 to $22.8 million. Meanwhile, the firm’s median employee earned $19,177 in the same period.

The largest chunk of McMillon’s compensation came in the form of stock awards. He has held the company’s top job since 2014.

The company’s spokesperson Randy Hargrove said that, in the past few years, Walmart has made important investments in its workers, including raising its minimum wage in the US to $11 an hour in February. The retailer says it has also put money into training and education programs for employees.

The released information showed that at Macy's, the CEO earned $11.1 million in the last fiscal year, which is 806 times the salary of a median employee. GAP’s chief executive made $15.6 million, or 2,900 times more than the median employee.

Walmart made $14B in profit last year, yet Walmart workers received $6B worth of welfare.

So US taxpayers are subsidizing 43% of Walmart's profit because Walmart won't pay its workers a wage high enough that they don't qualify for welfare.

American workers are certainly exploited. The wage inequality gap is for real. I remember 5 or so years ago when democrats tried to make an issue of this and everybody laughed - the public knows democrats are just as bad at raking in money for doing nothing as repubs. Hillary was charging $225,000 per speech and last year barry got a book deal advance of $65 million.

We need to raise the minimum wage and the business owner need to take the hit. PERIOD. They should not be allowed to shift the cost onto the consumer.

Americans believe keeping low wages keeps jobs and keeps cost lower.

Americans like slavery.

I can't believe I'm saying this but we agree.

The unbolded part of your post is pure malarkey.

The guy you voted for, Trump, has made it a life habit of screwing and stiffing his workers and contractors.

I mean, the irony is so thick with the OP that the Onion article just writes itself.

"Concerned about economic inequality and wage injustice?? VOTE REPUBLICAN!"

This article lists inequality by states. In the top 12 you have Connecticut, New York, California, Massachusetts, Illinois and New Jersey. Those are six big Democratic dominated states. If the answer is simply vote Democratic how does that occur?

And fwiw look at inequality levels under Obama. It hockey sticks. When your goal is to push people into riskier asset classes as they did with real estate and the stock market then the people at the top will benefit most. So again simply saying Vote Democratic isn't really an answer

He raised sales and wages. What has the median shopping cart pusher done new for the company?

He didn't do much. A top exec acts on information gathered by his staff. Then he simply ratifies what their data says. Execs are not inventing the wheel. They are taking a ride on it. The higher you go up the corporate ladder, the less you do.

Who decided to raise wages again?

Even if true, does that justify the number 1200??? Even 120 would be outrageous.

I don't own Walmart stock so it is not for me to say what they should or should not pay their CEO. Since Walmart is a multinational company with multinational supply chains, I am guessing the CEO does a little more than sit around collecting stock options.

OK, can you tell us how many employees walmart has so we can make a statistic that is normalized for comparison with other employers? There are many poor people employed who qualify for government assistance. We can compare walmart's percentage of employees to other employers. Can you recommend a data source? As it is, your statistic doesn't tell us very much.

WalMart has 1.2 million employees who average wage is about $12/hr. $12/hr wage qualifies you for several income assistance programs like SNAP.

In no world should someone who is employed not be paid a living wage.

Walmart suckles at the teat of the taxpayers because we make up for the gap in pay they give their workers.

If Walmart paid its employees enough that they didn't qualify for government assistance, like Costco does, they'd have made $8B instead of $14B. Since Walmart isn't a public company, then there's no reason to continue subsidizing their profits.

The other thing we'll need to know is what kind of hours the employee worked. Full time? Part time? Were their hours less than the magical cutoff for mandated employer ACA coverage? Wonder why? LOL

Walmart employs a ton of seniors who work part time and purposefully work only enough hours to stay under the cutoff point for their government assistance. McDonalds and all the fast food places have the same thing going on. It's a choice the employee is making. Walmart attracts these employees because it's a relatively easy job.
