I think it's a form of astroturfing, to your second point.

I think they create so many new accounts so they can fake more support for their weird beliefs than actually exists.

I think it also helps create a safe space for them, where they feel they aren't outnumbered and can draw on those socks to give them comfort in a debate they can't win on the merits of their arguments.

Nope. The votes must be legal votes. If there are illegal votes involved, no one wins after the count. The fake ballots must be accounted for.
In the case of the President, he is not elected by popular vote. He is elected by the electoral college. The election elects the electoral college members.
