The president's forecast goes against those of many political prognosticators, who have predicted a weaker year for Republicans, in part because the party in control of the White House often struggles in midterm elections and in part because of the president's poor poll numbers.
Still, the president has insisted that those predicting doom and gloom for the GOP are wrong, just as they were in the days and weeks leading up to the 2016 election, which he was widely expected to lose by a wide margin.
