Weather favors a Democrat win

It took months to figure out that Franken won in Minnesota. With a pandemic, you would think that overtaxing the mail system would allow for relaxing of certain protocols. Especially when the Feds actively worked to jam up the USPS.

But I agree. Knowing that their votes are actively being suppressed, people should take action to assure timely receipt. What about an overtaxed USPS not getting the requested ballots delivered to the voters in the first place?

After the 2000 election "hanging chad" fiasco, improvements and security were made. Same will happen for an aging population.

Two thoughts on the Wisconsin ruling: 1) It harms military personnel, most of whom are living out of state. 2) it's another Republican attempt to disenfranchise voters, including military personnel.

Fiasco next Tuesday or not, I expect most states, if not the Feds themselves, make necessary improvements to absentee voting.

Early, Absentee, and Mail Voting
Overview
The percentage of voters who cast their ballots on a voting machine at a polling place on Election Day has declined steadily over the past decade, while the number of states offering early voting, no-excuse absentee voting, and vote by mail has increased.

The total number of voters who voted early, absentee or by mail more than doubled from 24.9 million in 2004 to 57.2 million in 2016, representing an increase from one in five of all ballots cast to two in five of all ballots cast.

The number of U.S. citizens voting early more than doubled from nearly 10.2 million early ballots cast in 2004 to 24.1 million early ballots cast in 2016.

In 2016, 16 states showed a combined percentage of greater than 50 percent of votes cast early, by mail, or via absentee voting.
Early, Absentee, and Mail Voting
Voting in the Unites States in the 21st century has undergone some significant changes since the Norman Rockwell image of the voter in the polling booth. One of the most significant changes is the trend of more and more people receiving and casting ballots before Election Day.

Each state has its own laws and regulations governing when, where, and how voters can cast ballots. All states allow for some form of absentee voting by mail, however this process is administered in different ways by the states, including:

Excuse required absentee voting: A voter must provide a reason why they are casting an absentee ballot and cannot appear to vote on Election Day.

No-excuse required absentee voting: A voter does not need to provide a reason why they are casting an absentee ballot and cannot appear to vote on Election Day.

Permanent absentee voting: A voter can sign up once to receive an absentee ballot and will receive absentee ballots in all future elections.

Vote by mail: All registered voters in the jurisdiction are mailed a ballot.

Additionally, certain states allow for early voting, which allows qualified voters to cast a ballot in person at designated locations and during specific times prior to Election Day. In the Election Administration and Voting Survey (EAVS), early voting data includes both early votes cast on voting machines and absentee ballots that are cast at an in person location prior to Election Day.

His inane rambling at his rallies is getting crazier and crazier. His fans don't even know what the applause lines are anymore.

My take is they are tiring of his BS. They'll clap things like God Bless America or America First, so they are paying attention, but with "rounding the turn", crickets are starting to be heard.

The man really is great at what he does. He just rolls on past to the next topic, even if it's sports or something local. He breaks from the silence and keeps changing subjects until he gets a loud applause. He'll stick with that topic until the applause begin to fade then transition to something new. He never gets angry at the crowd and keeps trying to focus all anger or hate on something else, usually Democrats. He's very good on stage even though 99% of his words are complete bullshit.

Republlicans always pray for rain on election day because, as a Republican campaign worker once told me many years ago, "it sucks to be at a bus stop when it's raining."

Although I haven't come across any numbers on predicted turnout yet, the weather across the nation favors mild conditions next week.

https://www.mprnews.org/story/2020/10/26/favorable-weather-looks-likely-for-election-day-2020
When it comes to weather, this could be one of the more tranquil elections days on record for the U.S.

The medium-range weather maps suggest a mostly dry and mild weather pattern across the U.S. by next Tuesday. And mild dry weather could help boost voter turnout.

Note the Jetstream is north of the 48th parallel and temperatures will be mild. Even so, I strongly support voting ASAP. I already did last week.

So basically you are saying that D voters tend to be much more pussified than R voters and just tend to stay home and not vote at all over a little tough weather. That their convictions are not greater than the raindrops. Hmmmmmmmm,......actually, yeah....I find that VERY believable. How lame.

Agree. He keeps throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. Increasingly, it's sentence fragments and pieces of thoughts that flood his brain at the moment. These are the truly embarrassing segments of his time on the stage. We understand what he's hinting at, because we dissect his nonsense every day.

The majority in the crowd are there for the spectacle, and don't really care about/understand the issues. They have absolutely no idea what he's talking about.

As you say...he thinks aloud until he finds something that they react to. The problem is, he's handing the Lincoln Project free soundbites as his inner racist/misogynist rears its ugly head. Some of the shit he says makes his handlers cringe. In '16, they managed to take his tweet machine away in the last week. He was pushing hard on one or two catchphrases. Then Comey jumped on the bandwagon and pushed him over the finish line.

This year, they have absolutely no control over him.

The thing about Trump, people are willing to stand in the rain for hours to vote him out!

According to the support you lefties have for mail in voting, how would you be standing in the rain. You're too goddamn lazy to get off your asses.

With all the court challenges, and USPS issues that arise each day, I've decided that there is only one thing to do. (Although, yesterday a judge ordered the USPS to increase overtime, and ignore trump's actions aimed at gumming up the election process)

Count all the votes. Period. I don't mean that states will be allowed to ignore trump's Supreme Court voter suppression efforts. I mean take two weeks if necessary, and make sure the American public knows who ACTUALLY won the election. If trump is doing a victory dance after millions of votes have been discarded, let the public know what those millions of people had to say.

No, but I can see why that's what you'd assume.

There are already laws in place regarding voting. If there are holes in those laws, then fix them but not 5 days before an election. As noted in the graph, more Americans are using absentee balloting and, especially, early voting. The State and Federal governments should adapt themselves to serve We, the People. This takes time and 5 days before an election is not time enough to do it. Extending Overtime is good. Letting people vote until Thanksgiving is not since it violates a lot of laws.

I should have been more clear. Ballots still have to be postmarked by election day. Granted...I'm not really in favor of accepting mail ballots that late, and the vast majority of mail in ballots that are not counted will have been mailed one week before election day.

If 9/11 happened on 11/1, you bet your ass we would have made arrangements to have the votes counted. Covid is essentially the same type of issue. "Changing laws" 5 days before the election is not what's happening here. States have been fighting against trump's judges for months. Not unlike Covid, a common sense nationwide approach is what was necessary. Instead we got an obvious attempt to steal the election.

Count the votes, even if the courts decided that some voters don't have the right to be heard. Let the people then make their voices heard about who they want in the White House.

Don't the states control that requirement? I know Federal laws apply too, but am not sure where the lines are drawn. Obviously "postmarked by election day" isn't in the Constitution, so where is it written down as law?

A slight disagreement about the rush to change laws on voting. Yes, the Republicans have spent the past 20 years seeking to disenfranchise American voters. Yes, our election laws need to be updated to 21st century needs of We, the People. No, it can't be done this week.

If you're too stupid and lazy to get your ballot in the mail on time, it shouldn't be counted. They've been advertising this mail in shit for 2 month (at least) now, if you can't follow simple directions, go to the polls on Tuesday and vote in person. The GF has received over half a dozen ballot request forms (she's a Dem), I've received 3 or 4 (I'm a Rep), but we both are going to the polls and vote in person. Why can't you??

Get a job.

Houston has one drop box for almost 5 million people. Guess what demographic is the largest in that area? Governor Abbot should be charged with obstructing the right to vote in Texas.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/opin...blicans-making-harder-people-vote/3652644001/
Harris County, home to Houston and many of its suburbs, has 4.7 million people, making it more populous than nearby Louisiana. Harris County is, in fact, bigger than 25 American states and would rate eight, and possibly nine, electoral votes if it were a state itself. Roughly evenly divided between the parties as late as 2012, it has turned decidedly blue in the era of Donald Trump.

On the other extreme are Texas’ 184 counties with populations of less than 50,000. Of these, perhaps the most chronicled is Loving County, a flat expanse of West Texas populated by oil wells, desert shrubs and 169 people. Its politics are evident in the number of votes for Hillary Clinton in 2016: four.

So, when the governor and attorney general, both Republicans, announce that they will limit mail ballot dropboxes to one per county, it is not hard to see what they are after.

I believe states do have the last say, but the Feds rule on the legality of any 'new' situations. We have Red state legislatures actively suppressing votes. We're not talking about changing laws. We're talking about making arrangements to assure that voters have the ability to be heard.

trump plotted well in advance by destroying the ability of the USPS to handle the rush of mail in ballots. Now he's claiming that the law states that all votes must be counted by election night.

My point in this discussion is that even if millions of people are denied their rights, we should still count every vote and see what the country intended.

A dysfunctional Congress isn't going to fix it. We could elect the world's greatest leader and we'd still be fucked if Congress couldn't agree on legislation to pass for Presidential signature.

Given that this is a state issue, we'll probably see many more states building a mail in infrastructure. The 5 states that already employ this method have no problems. Truthfully, the problem is trump. With any other POTUS, waiting a few days to assure that everyone's vote is counted would not be an issue.

trump has never won anything legally. He cheats at business. He cheats on his wives. He cheats at golf, ffs.

It's fair to say it's both a State and Federal problem. Again, it needs to be fixed but it won't be fixed in 2020.
