Certain elements in the English boss-class were for the Confederacy, but the Lancashire workers stopped them, at great cost to themselves. Lee was a decent man for a slaveowner, which is not saying much.

Marx was born in 1818. He was n adult at around 1850. I belive the civil war ended before he was born.

Marx was very enthused about the US and considered it ripe to become socialist in time. To be a candidate for socialism, according to Marx, you should first develop an advanced form of capitalism. Russia going red was completely unexpected and the last thing Marx would have predicted.

Jesus, aren't these buggers in a world of their own! Obviously capitalism produces socialism, because until you get capitalism you don't get a working class in a position to overthrow the governing class effectively, or a sufficiently advanced economy. In Russia you had a very advanced and militant but miniscule working class living in a state that was a political shambles in which no class had any real strength, so Lenin decided it was worth the bet, but HM's chums murdered many and destroyed industry to such a degree that the workers who survived went back to the villages, leaving a dictatorship of those who preferred to stay alive.
