Almost all African-Americans have Euro-American blood in them. Ergo, dad, unless he's from Africa, is less than 100% "black" meaning Kap is over 50% "white"....for those playing that game*. I don't. Kap is no more black than Rachel Dolenzo....maybe less so. The difference is the culture in which they've been raised and choose to live.

*Same for Obama?

Actually I was going to mention Obama, given that both had white mothers and black fathers.

Kaepernick didn't choose to be adopted by a white family when he was five weeks old, so I don't know how he had a say-so in how he was raised and how the family chose to live. His adoptive family has talked about some of the issues that came from raising him in an all-white household, and how as Caucasian parents of a bi-racial child, they faced many uncomfortable stares, curious comments and criticism, especially while he was young. Here are pics of his siblings when children and adults. It couldn't have been easy for Colin and his family, given how nasty people can be about families like this.

Do you believe "race" is genetic or cultural?

She doesn't have a problem with the country...

She has a problem with you.

You are not the country. You are just some asshole on an anonymous message board, and the closest you've ever come to the Olympics is watching it in your father's basement, on his TV.

Disagreed. She's claiming the US is racist and, by current far left theory, every "white" person is a fucking racist asshole who deserves punishment.

Sorry, but that theory isn't working for me. :)

I believe it should be a neutral term for identifying groups, not comparing them in the sense that one is better than the other.

Rather than race, if we have to lump ppl into groups and put labels on them, why not identify them by continent of ancestral origin? Like "Asian," "African," "European," "North/South American," etc.?

Of course, if we go back far enough we're all African.

Identifying by continent of ancestral origin seems like a good idea. Not that it would stop people from saying "Europeans are better than Asians" or "Africans are better than Chinese" etc. Human nature and all that. (:

As long as they behave like good little trained dogs and entertain, and only "bark" when it's deemed "safe", then all is well. Hell, you can cheat on your wife, be a bar brawler, a drunk, drug user, be evangelical about your (majority accepted) religion, and the most you face is a fine and a time out or rehab before being allowed back into the fold.

But

Use your platform to protest the systemic racism and bigotry in this country, then you're vilified.

yeah, that sounds fair.

Nothing wrong with identifying with one's family origins. The problems come in when one starts asserting that one's origin is superior to another's or blaming others origins for all the problems in the world.

If we picture a perfect world, what would it be like? Acting like those people is how someone who really wants change should act. Being a racist is not the way to end racism.

Agreed although I have problems with hyphenated Americans.....which is one reason why I relish saying "Euro-Americans". LOL

Race is a social construct. Blaming one "race" for the construction is just being a racist asshole. ;)

What sporting event is more political than the Olympics? They keep score by gold silver and bronze medal according to each nation. That is run in the front of every sports section and many front pages. If you get fewer medals than the people want, it is a national crisis and people must be fired. Berry is not turning the Olympics political. The only problem is those in charge do not like her politics.

Besides one's doctor, who should give a shit about "identifying groups"? Seriously. Employers? One's government?

Agreed that such groupings used for comparing superiority is wrong. That goes for those blaming one group for the problems of another group.

Nations are the teams. Albeit some bitching(eg Ice Skating) , judges of competitions are fair. The rules are clear.

IMHO, sports watchers should focus more on supporting those abiding by the rules than supporting the rule breakers.

Politics has no place in anything except politics. Politics only fucks up science, sports and anything else it becomes involved in.

The Olympics is not political at all. How stupid are you?
It's a competition between the country's best athletes.

LOL. Love the analogy, disagree on its use.

We all have unalienable rights. Obviously including every right you mentioned. Where you and I seem to disagree is that you believe government provides those rights and I believe it's government that often takes those rights away.
I don't remember making that claim?

The discussion has focused on a statement made by an Olympic hopeful. This nation is a disgrace, and she brings attention to it. It is indeed the state governments who are taking away the rights I mentioned above.
