Fact -When the Civil War started, Lincoln asked Robert E Lee to lead all Union troops

I was never trying to be right about it, as I don't give a rats ass. I even explained why in my post. So your comment missed the mark so bad, it landed in an open field. Lee was a strong Union choice, until he turned to treason. Besides his obvious faults, he was a strong leader back then. Why wouldn't Lincoln have asked him? It's not like he knew what would unfold when he asked.

He was right, you were wrong.

So all these attacks on Trump for supposedly defending Robert E. Lee look pretty weak unless the critics also want to attack Lincoln.

The CW was NOT about slavery. The idea is preposterous - more media fake news that's been going on for 150 years . Along with the above fact it's also true that:

1. There were 4 UNION states (ky md de mo) that lincoln let practice slavery throughout the war. 300,000 black slaves combined in those states

2. There were many UNION generals that were slave owners throughout the war. Grant himself owned a slave and his wife owned a bunch of them.

The Confederate States were established over the cause of slavery. Their vice president even declared that the cornerstone of the new nation was slavery. Lee chose to stop being an American officer, and joined with the enemy.

Lincoln first asked Lee to lead the Union Army. Lee turned him down.

That's not what Jade was disagreeing with. TDAK also stated that the American side should love Lee as much as the Confederate side, since he was the officer that Lincoln first turned to.

Then Jade was wrong in that respect too because the North was not what a lot of people would like to believe it was. There was slavery in the North. And, Lee was an accomplished officer. Knocking statues down isn't going to change that.

No, but since America defeated the Confederacy, I don't see why we should honor their heroes with monuments. The Romans didn't erect monuments to the defeated Latins, Samnites, or Etruscans. Caesar never petitioned to have a statue built commemorating the heroic stand of Vercingetorix.

And Americans have never practiced decimation as far as I know so what's your point? Two very different cultures.

The Civil War most assuredly was about slavery.

Secession of the states that formed the Confederacy...was about slavery.

The crap that it was not is what is absurd!

By the way...I think most educated people realize that Lincoln asked Lee to lead the Union forces and that Lee refused.

If this came as a surprise to you...perhaps you ought to read that previous sentence again.

In making the argument about culture and morality, people can more easily defend the CSA monuments by making false equivalencies between America and the Confederacy. I say, we need only recognize that the monuments are an intrusion upon American sovereignty. We wouldn't tolerate monuments to Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia, and we shouldn't tolerate them for the Confederacy. If people have a problem with that, then, perhaps they don't appreciate this country or its sovereignty.

Hey einstein. If the war had been about freeing slaves, then lincoln would have told those 4 states to abolish slavery or go with the confederates. He did no such thing. He let them stay in the union and practice slavery all 4 years of the war. THINK, white-hating racist liberal.

Only Congress could make slavery illegal.
Government 101

there was no slavery in the north

The Southern States, obviously, broke away because they disliked Lincoln's beard. It had nothing to do with slavery. People don't usually choose generals on ideological grounds, but because they are good at their job, which Lee was. I think reactionary Americans are going all out to be acclaimed as not just the nastiest but the silliest people on earth.

Lee chose treason over the country that paid for his education, and place in the world.
He should have been hanged.
A worse enemy to the USA then Benedict Arnold.

Using your logic we should have hanged Nichola Sturgeon and Alex Salmond over Scottish IIndeoence, actually that's not a bad idea!
