Fact -When the Civil War started, Lincoln asked Robert E Lee to lead all Union troops

The Southern States, obviously, broke away because they disliked Lincoln's beard. It had nothing to do with slavery. People don't generally choose generals on ideological grounds, but because they are good at their job, which Lee was. I think reactionary Americans are going all out to be acclaimed as not just the nastiest but the silliest people on earth.

We should have taken the side of the Southern states with the proviso that slavery would be abolished within a decade or so. I have never found anybody able to tell me why it was a good idea for well over a million people to die. Not just in the battles but the aftermath of famine, pestilence and poverty. How was it good for the slaves to gain freedom only for them to starve to death? The ones that survived were then subjected to the Jim Crow laws, which were hardly much better than slavery anyway!

southern states thinking the confederacy was a good idea was a non starter from the git go.

They would've been subjected to Jim Crow in an independent south too. And it would've been harder to eliminate probably, might still be ongoing tbh.

Hey einstein. If the war had been about freeing slaves, then lincoln would have told those 4 states to abolish slavery or go with the confederates. He did no such thing. He let them stay in the union and practice slavery all 4 years of the war. THINK, white-hating racist liberal.

The war was about the southern states seceding. They seceded because they were worried about slavery. In the beginning union politicians tried to compromise with the slavers. By the end they were in no mood to compromise and the abolition became one of the central themes.

This is revisionist lost cause bullshit that dominated thinking about the civil war in the early 20th century. Amazing how the south won the war and lost the peace? Birth of a Nation, Gone with the Wind - two early huge cinematic milestones, *both* full of tons of Lost Cause bullshit. We're tired of your lies.

Furthermore, Lincoln did not at the time have the constitutional authority to force those four states to abolish slavery. That only came with the 13th amendment. The emancipation proclamation only affected the southern states because, as they were in rebellion, they were effectively under military rule, did not possess legitimate sovereign governments, and his legal authority could extend there.

I don't care one bit. He's still an idiot trying to defend a traitor. Lee obviously hadn't committed treason when Lincoln did this, so it's worthless idiocy from one of the forums open, and slimy racists. An open racists opinion of anything Confederate is a waste of data, and time.

You fell for fake news.

NBC deliberately mischaracterized Trump’s comments and were forced to retract it.

Why do they have to lie?

Lee chose treason over the country that paid for his education, and place in the world.
He should have been hanged.
A worse enemy to the USA then Benedict Arnold.

Doesn't change the fact that Lincoln did first ask Lee to lead the Union Army and if you have to hate on Lee then great, but the man wasn't anywhere near as evil as some people try to make him out to be.

In making the argument about culture and morality, people can more easily defend the CSA monuments by making false equivalencies between America and the Confederacy. I say, we need only recognize that the monuments are an intrusion upon American sovereignty. We wouldn't tolerate monuments to Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia, and we shouldn't tolerate them for the Confederacy. If people have a problem with that, then, perhaps they don't appreciate this country or its sovereignty.

I am already aware of your take on the Civil War, I can't even remember how many times we've talked about it. The confederates were not Nazis or Soviets. Now, if you want to tear down statues then great...maybe you should start in Seattle with the statue of Lenin. You're familiar with his work, right? Take care of that first and once that's done then focus on Lee.

The British abolished slavery throughout the empire in 1833, they would have ensured that the South would have done the same. The Brits also paid huge compensation to slave traders, if Lincoln had. Done the same then there would have been no war.

Did either of them unilaterally declare independence in contradiction to the law?

Sorry but that just wrong, in fact several Northern states discussed seceding in 1812. It wasn't until the war was over that the Union decided that secession was not allowed. In fact, with true irony, the Northern states kicked the secession states out and then insisted they petition for reentry.
